The fortressed town of Cuenca is a hidden gem in the province of Castilla La Mancha and is a popular destination for tourists visiting Madrid or Valencia.
Cuenca is best represented in its medieval old town as well as the unique Hanging Houses (Las Casas Colgadas) which stand aloft on one of the deep canyons surrounding the city, and show a prime example of the common housing of 15th-century Cuenca.
Upon visiting the Old Town you will be welcomed by the remains of an ancient Arab fortress, El Castillo along with the chiming bells of Mangana Tower.
There is a variety of art galleries and restaurants which are situated in the newer side of town, whilst popular places to see are the Cuenca Cathedral, Museum of Spanish Abstract Art and the Archaeological Museum.
Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation options near landmarks such as Cuenca train station and Parque de San Julián.

Cuenca is a unique town - built on a a promontory between two steep sided river valleys. It has amazing views and beautiful medieval buildings. You must go to the Puente de San Pablo footbridge for the view from there. The Catedral de Cuenca is stunning. Also walk up to the top of the town to the Mirador Barrio del Castillo, the view from there is marvellous - and there are nice outdoor restaurants there to reward you for the effort.

Such an unusual and interesting, old town with plenty of cobbled streets to explore. The museum showing finds through the ages was worth visiting. The highest point of the town has great views across the gorges and some great cafes. The hanging houses are insanely tall.

Cuenca old town is a must in any Spain trip.
Cuenca old town is a must in any Spain trip. We were so fortunate to experience Holy Week festivities and to share with the locals. In addition, we experience intermittent snow which was a wonderful experience. The old town is a jewel with many options to get lost through the streets and to meet locals.

I like to see old historic cities ...even if the "glory days" are over. Cuenca does not disappoint on this count. The cathedral is a magnificent example of this as it is beautifully decorated in parts and equally shows evidence of being somewhat dilapidated structurally..in certain parts.
The "hanging house' theme is a little overworked but it is still very interesting to see what is left of them.
It's sheer geographical location is what surprised me most. The public transport system up and down between the new and old town is very efficient.
I stayed 2 nights...I could easily have stayed 3 to have 2 full days to explore a little more...assuming you can manage the walking...it is rarely flat...you are either climbing or descending usually and it's often quite steep!
I ate at the Piola Gastrobar, which shares the building with the Hotel Convento just up from the main Plaza Mayor. An excellent restaurant in my opinion.

Absolutely wonderful.
Absolutely wonderful. Breakfast was excellent.Dining room was nice, but why would anyone eat there when they will serve you in the beautiful courtyard by the fountain! Pool area is nice, and staffed with a lifeguard. Helpful hint: request a room with a bridge view. We did, and it was gorgeous.
The location is the best… the views were amazing. The cleanliness was great. There is a public parking super close the property (not cheap, €22 for 12 hours). The toiletries were perfect. The kitchen was perfectly equipped. I fell in live with the views from the bedroom and the living room. I could stay there for a long visit. I also were impressed with some drawings they found in the property before the restoration (and they show them with the explanation of each).
Everything was fantastic. The place is perfectly situated in the old town of Cuenca. You can walk everywhere. The views are spectacular. The flat is very well appointed, clean, with a modern kitchen and bathrooms.
The hosts are the best I've ever had in all of my years of travel - 30+. They really care about your comfort.
It is extremely secure. We felt very taken care of and the hospitality exceeded expectations.
This town is absolutely amazing. A must see!
Beautiful building and in a perfect location Parking though expensive was easy although getting past all the "abandoned" cars in the drive to the hotel was harrowing as was finding the hotel in the maze of one way and traffic restricted streets which both my SatNav and Google Maps seemed not to be able to cope with The breakfast room was beautiful and the breakfast, probably not worth the money but, OK.
It's a comfortable apartment in a great location in Cuenca. It's a short walk to all the main sights or you can use the bus that stops right in front of the building. The apartment has everything you need for a short or longer stay, it's fully equipped. Wifi also works great. The hosts are kind and helpful, communication was great. I had a great time, and would definitely recommend!
Handy little hotel just outside the beautiful historic centre of Cuenca. Perfect for overnight stop on my way to the ferry at Santander. Scenic 30 minute walk to the top of this fabulous city perched between the 2 rivers that have formed the landscape. Private garage available which I always prefer when touring on my F700GS moto.
A great place to stay if you wish to see rural Spain very few people spoke English in Cuenca so take an iPhone with the iTranslate app
This is almost a town centre hotel 300 yards from the shops bars restaurants etc you’ll need a taxi the the old walled city which is a must to see.
Clean, cleverly made facilities and stylish decor. I felt and slept well there. Nice and easy going staff, breakfast included is a nice bonus. Good location, bus stop from and to Cuenca Fernando Zóbel train station in the radius of 50 meters. Highly recommended.
Fantastic position. 15 minute walk into town requires you to be sure-footed. Patio area great position for sundowner. Paco a great host. Great rural contrast to Cuencas touristy feel. Didn’t try the WiFi but excellent phone signal.
An honest rustic hotel full of character - if a little quirky - well, its 15th Century!! Car parking close by but would use free car park which is a little further away. Fabulous views of the gorge and Parador opposite.
The owner is kind, the apartment is clean, and everything is good, but the noise between floors is very bad We have to booked hotel for two nights for sleep at Booking.com again.
Modern ilumination, bathrooms and decorations.
The room was warm and the views to the river were pretty nice.
