HOTEL WOOD TAKAYAMA, hotel in Takayama

Conveniently located in the center of Takayama, HOTEL WOOD TAKAYAMA provides air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi and private parking.

I loved my stay here! I really can't say that enough. I was only in Takayama for two nights and this was the perfect place to stay, right in the heart of the old town. I loved being able to walk out the door and right into the streets first thing in the morning or in the evening when no one else was around. The hotel itself is beautiful and smells great. I did do the onsen both nights and it was a nice relaxing experience, and I had breakfast one morning which was nice as none of the restaurants open early. The staff were all lovely and if I ever make it back to Takayama I am definitely staying here.

Superb location in historic center! Great price, simple, clean with access to breakfast. You are greeted and assisted by the former owner who now manages the property. She is kind and solicitous of her guests’ needs and goes the extra mile to ensure their comfort. The walk up is a bit steep but we are 3 women in our 70s and managed. There are two onsens for guests. The one for women is bright and cheerful.

Takayama was my favourite destination in Japan - it is beautiful, a little calmer than some of the other tourist attraction cities and there was lots to see and do. I wish I had stayed longer. The espresso from the riverside market was the best coffee I had in Japan!

    We highly recommend a visit.

We highly recommend a visit. The city is beautiful and provides a respite from the larger cities. The sound of the river seems to permeate the city. The flowering of cherry trees is magnificent during theSpring Festival. Some beautiful shrines and Edo period buildings, including a museum that provides an opportunity to walk through the living quarters and government administrative buildings and identifies the day to day functioning of a local government officials. There is a wonderful, ‘tiny’ bar near the Retro Museum that is a place to hang out and meet other travelers and converse with the owner. His creative cocktails are really delicious. Loved the outside and upstairs seating as well. This city knows how to welcome its guests with benches and a customer friendly attitude. Wonderful experience.

My husband and I visited Japan for 20 days and this was one of our favorite places! It is an incredibly beautiful, well cared for traditional ryokan. The building is old, but that gives it so much character! The staff here were exceptional. They were incredibly kind and so friendly we felt very well taken care of during our stay. The onsens were beautiful as well! Also the futons they had were some of the most comfortable beds we slept in during our entire trip to Japan! I really can't recommend this ryokan enough!

Traditional Japanese Ryokan with nicely decorated rooms. This was my first Ryokan experience and I have never felt as well cared for as during my stay there. Futon was very comfortable, too (I have never slept on one before). Staff is very attentive and helpful. Great inhouse onsens. Yukata were available for free for guests. Many ammendities were available for free and I loved their shampoo. Takayama old city center is just a 15 min walk away. Takayama station is just 6 min away by foot.

The hotel feels ever so slightly on the older side, but in my opinion that works in its favour, as it adds to its charm. Everything was styled as a proper ryokan, the whole hotel has tatami floor. The top level open air Onsen is just fantastic, looking over the city (it was snowing very heavy while I was there, which made it even better). The breakfast buffet is also like a Japanese Kaiseki breakfast, amazing! Staff were also very friendly and polite like most places in Japan.

Lovely country ryokan up in the mountains with great onsen baths. Its remote and no facilities nearby but if you want a real Japanese ryokan experience this is great value. Dont expect Western menu but enjoy the artistry of japanese cuisine. There is a bus stop 150m away but buses run hourly genetslly. 1.5hr to Takayama and 2hrs or so to Matsumoto. Both via Hirayu Onsen. Its also close to beautiful Kamikochi and the Shin Hotaka Ropeway.

We were so grateful. Location is superb. Just a stone's throw away from.Takayama Station. This was our only Ryokan stay, so I'm not really qualified to say, but I think it was a lovely place and certainly felt like a traditional Japanese experience. We appreciated the free shuttle from/to the bus/train at no cost and it was such a quick and lovely walk to everything in Takayama - what a fantastic little town! The staff were so kind, the Ryokan is so cute and we enjoyed the onsen.

This is an excellent budget option: the full ryokan experience at a very affordable price. The rooms are HUGE and the onsen are truly gorgeous. The staff are caring and kind, the room is beautiful with a view of the perfect Japanese garden. I highly recommend staying here. The friendly staff who were able to communicate in English. To be greeted with happy faces in the morning made my stay very pleasant. Buffet breakfast had western & Japanese food. This is the first ryokan we stayed in, so it's a bit hard to judge against others, but in general it was a very enjoyable experience at an excellent price. We really enjoyed the private bathing areas and the meals (served very traditionally and eaten while sitting on tatami mats). It's out of the way, but that's sort of the point, and easily reached by bus from Takayama.

Rooftop onsen was definitely the highlight of the stay here. The view there is great especially when it is snowing. Also, room having it's own onsen with the same view as the rooftop onsen is the cherry on top. Food was good and you'll like this place if you prefer a more hotel like experience than a ryokan one. Location is good if you are visiting Shinhotaka.

The room and futon were not as comfortable as some other ryokans I stayed in during my other trips to Japan. But it was alright. It was clean and comfortable enough. The location was good. It was in the middle of a tiny village so I could go out and had some dining outside the hotels and there was a local minimart or souvenir shops too.
