Al-Minar Hotel, hotel in Zanzibar City

Located in Zanzibar City, 400 metres from The Zanzibar Curio shop, Al-Minar Hotel has a terrace and a shared lounge.

The hotel is situated in the very centre of Stone Town, you wouldn‘t wish for a better location. It is not directly on the beach but both walking to the beach and to numerous restaurants and cafes is just matter of couple of minutes. The hotel itself is in oriental style that gives it some special charm. The restaurant is on the roof which is not so high but the views make you feel like in the 18th century, which we found interesting. The staff is very friendly but they do not always address to the mentioned problems. One can feel a bit of lack of professionalism in the sphere but because they are all nice young people, it is not a big problem, one can always improve themselves:) The breakfast was good, not very different from the breakfast in other hotels on the island. As usual you get fruit and then can choose from salty and sweet options of breakfast. The room was very small but in fact there was enough space for our stuff and clothes, and you have everything you usually need in hotels, the bed was big and good but it takes most of the space in the room, so do not expect moving around much in the room because there is not much room:)) The bathroom was not small and I would call it comfortable what refers to the facilities, but we could not get hot water even though we turned the switch on and waited for a really long time, so we had to shower with cold water every day and though we told the staff about it, it was not fixed (either not possible or forgotten). The shower heads (both the big and the small ones) were very old and even rusty, the small hand shower was not functioning at all, so we had to use the big one and make our hair wet even when we did not want it. The shower switch remained in my hand the very first time I tried to turn it on, and I barely touched it.

Zanzibar Palace Hotel, hotel in Zanzibar City

Zanzibar Palace Hotel is located in Stone Town on Zanzibar Island. It offers individually decorated suites with free Wi-Fi.

I loved my room and high bed, it was very romantic. Fast wifi worked well all around the hotel. Hotel decorations, traditional lamps, doors, paintings, wardrobes etc were really unique, stunning. The hotel was colorful and charming inside. Attention to detail. Mosquito net around bed. Great location, easy to walk around the entire old town, just a 2-minute walk to the ferry terminal and a few more minutes to the beach. Cute bathrobes in my room. Restaurant at the main floor.

I sailed as a sea captain all around the island, including Pemba island. I spent here almost 2 months altogether. From tourist places, I liked Nungwi beaches. You have to know, most of tourist resorts are situated outside of local civilization. If you want to go shopping or to the local restaurant, you need to order a taxi everytime and the prices are high. The food and alcohol is quite expensive even for europeans. The locals are kind, although sometimes annoying if they are selling something. I felt absolutely safe, more than in EU. Traffic in the inlands is terrible, try to avoid travelling on these roads. Negotiate the price (taxi etc) before drive. They are able to ask 50 USD for 3 kilometres of ride after. If I could decide, I would try another exotic islands. Zanzibar needs 5-10 years to improve the services for tourist, infrastructure etc.

Navigating Zanzibar City was surprisingly easy, with an array of transportation options available. The compact size of the city made it convenient to explore on foot, with many attractions within walking distance of each other. I would definitely suggest trying the local Swahili food for fresh fish and seafood. For a visitor from South Africa, I found the price of food and drinks at restaurants relatively expensive.

It was lovely and we got to see the history of the slave trade (albeit sadly as it was a horrendous practice). The beaches are also very beautiful (Jambiani Beach was where we mostly went.) The spice farm tour and markets were lovely as we got all kinds of fresh spices. However, it is very tourist-centric. Payment is in dollars everywhere and people are always trying to sell you something. Feels very commercialised.

Dirty, smelly, full of approaching ~beach boys, sellers and beggars. Much more aggressive than up north. Mostly came for a Nakupenda tour. Nice place but be aware that it’s crowded - by lots of tourists and then of course even the aggressive up in your face wanting to touch you sellers there too. The more upscaled beach hotels and restaurants are nice though.

I spent a night at Shaba Boutique Hotel before flying out of Zanzibar and it was perfect. I was able to check in a bit earlier and the room was stunning, the bed and all the decor felt true to Stone Town and the staff were so friendly and helpful in arranging transport to the airport as well. The breakfast was excellent in the morning. Location was great, during the night it can be intimidating walking the streets but it really isn't too far from the typical tourist spots. I would stay again in a heartbeat! Highly recommend.

Nice hotel right on the beach and next to the port. Great location with everything in easy walking distance from the hotel. Our room was spacious and clean with a huge ornate bathroom. Beds were big and comfortable. TV, Fridge and a Kettle in the room with some tea and coffee provided. Breakfast was ok. The pool was nice with plenty of shaded areas and a great way to cool off after walking around the back streets of Stone Town.
