Hotel in Tamarindo
Located in Tamarindo, Hotel Casa Carlota Tamarindo features a garden. There's a year-round outdoor pool and guests can use free WiFi and free private parking. I travel a lot and I don't think I've met friendlier or more helpful hosts at this hotel. Due to a shortage of rental cars throughout Costa Rica, I was without transportation when I arrived at the hotel. Jeffrey and Shirley gave me a ride to downtown Tamarindo and even took time from their busy schedule to provide a personal tour of the town. Shirley even arranged an Uber taxi for me to travel to my next stop at Coco Beach. They are renovating the hotel and it is now modern, clean and reasonably priced.

Tamarindo is a great little beach town, there are restaurants, shops, bars and lots of tours leave from the area. It's not the best beach in Guanacaste (you can take ATV tours to some other area beaches or rent a car and explore on your own) but there is definitely more to do over all. We went in July and it wasn't crowded at all, but I imagine there is quite the influx of people during the busy season. Would definitely come back!
Playa Hermosa in the Guanacaste Province, is one of my favorite places in all of Costa Rica. Beautiful beaches, sunsets, restaurants, and amazing local and tourist people. Very safe area that should be discovered!!
Playa flamingo is in Guanacaste Provence, the least populated provence in Costa Rica. It is also the most upscale of destinations. Not much in the way of nightlife, but I and others appreciate that. Lots of great restaurants, a wonderful long sandy beach, and plenty of tour activities available. There are a large number of American ex-pats that make this area home. Coco loco restaurant on the beach is a must. The seared tuna is to die for. Having a car is a good idea. Some of the roads, like to the beach aren't paved, but overall, driving is not much of a problem. There are also taxis, and the tour companies offer transportation.
I had been to Tamarindo several times in the 80's and 90's and I was very sad to find my sleepy little beach town all grown up. It seems to happen to all the good places. I was there with my family over the holidays, when the place fills up with Costa Rican city dwellers as well as American and European tourists, which definitely accounts for some of the crowding and price-gouging we encountered, but not all of it. Tamarindo has made the jump from a surfing and fishing town to a playground for people with money to throw around. We had a rental car we used to get out of town and visit quiet beaches to the south and the volcanoes and forest to east. The traffic was so bad some days it took 30 minutes to go a few blocks. The classic white sand beaches were full of people and the locals advised us to stay out of the water due to pollution from sewage. Charter prices for fishing trips were astronomical. With all this said, it all depends on what you are looking for: If you want a low-key spot where you can experience authentic local culture and chill-out on beautiful, uncrowded beaches, there are plenty of spots still like that in Guanacaste. If you want everything in English and want to hang out and party down with other tourists drinking $8 margaritas, Tamarindo is your kind of place.
Playa Hermosa is considered one of the nicest beaches in Guanacaste province and we felt that to be true after visiting three other beaches in the area. It is a wide sandy beach with dark gray/black sand; there are lots of trees and places to sit so easy to get into shade after sun-tanning or swimming. It's a nice long beach for a walk to either end. Playa Hermosa is quieter than other beach communities but we liked that it wasn't commercial but had the right balance of tranquility along with good restaurant selections and felt like we are experiencing life like the locals on the beach. I would definitely go back to this same area. It's about a 25 minute drive from Liberia airport and well worth having a car to be able to explore.
A perfect surfing town in Guanacaste! Great people, access to awesome beaches and surfing, wonderful food and nightlife - a perfect place to anchor a vacation in CR.
We stayed 2 weeks total in Costa Rica. Loved flying into Liberia Airport!!! Compared to San Jose airport.....It's smaller, clean and not busy at all! Liberia is definitely a quieter city than the big city of San Jose. Thank goodness we flew into Liberia airport because the week we flew in, San Jose airport was temporarily closed due to the various active volcanoes in the area. We heard traffic was diverted. There was car traffic everywhere in San Jose. Just so glad we chose Liberia. It was our first time flying into Liberia airport and will ONLY fly into Liberia on our next trip to Costa Rica!!! The first week, we visited Drake Bay (which was very South of Liberia near Osa Peninsula!). Then the 2nd week, we flew back to Liberia Airport and stayed in Guanacaste - Ocotal Beach area.
El Coco tiene muchas opciones interesantes de comida y varios Bares para salidas en la noche, se ven buenos atardeceres pero la playa no es la mejor de Guanacaste
Central beach for Guanacaste. Lots of restaurants, bars, grocery stores and other services on main street. Many low rise condos and small hotels for tourists but this is still a living town for locals. They had the annual “rodeo” while we were there with horse parades, marching bands and fireworks. Very a much a Tico celebration. Recommend a car to visit other beaches and other attractions in area. Canopy tour, zip-lining, rafting, riding etc.
Liberia is a transit point between many of the great sites in Guanacaste, but as there as so many great places within a couple of hours, I would recommend picking a place that meets the travelers interest, beaches, mountains, etc and staying there for cheaper.
Playa Conchal
The premises are fantastic, the surrounding breathtaking nature is unbelievable, as all of the nature in Costa Rica is! Of course, Playa Conchal where the hotel is, is the best beach in all of Guanacaste (northern province of Costa Rica) with its white sands and turquoise blue water, you can only be grateful that you are there and cannot ask for more! The room was awesome in every way. Magnificent ocean view, dual shower heads, a super comfortable king size bed, big balcony, big sized room! Friendly staff!
We were blown away by this property! Booked it last minute because we needed somewhere to stay before our flight out of Liberia Guanacaste Airport (LIR) and it was the perfect ending to our stay. The pool was large with lots of chairs and is surrounded by lush trees while iguanas and peacocks walk around the premises. The restaurant on property is pleasant and wholesome. AC works great and there is an ice machine in the hotel. The free breakfast is delightful and I appreciated the COVID safe precautions.
Loved the deer, agouti and monkeys freely roaming the property. Like an oasis once leaving the busy main road. We stayed two nights heading home via Guanacaste Airport. We were glad that we stayed two nights as location was perfect being next door to a river that provided rafting, which was excellent and on the other side of the hotel was the Puma Sanctuary, also worth a visit. Staff here are all very attentive and helpful. Altogether a great stay
I have always struggled to get a quiet and clean room in Liberia (Guanacaste) without paying a lot. This place met all my expectations. The room was extremely clean and the bed was very comfortable. The neighborhood was really nice and I felt really safe. Its a basic hotel but has all you need for an overnight (or perhaps a couple of nights) stay in Liberia. I strongly recommend this little hotel.
Liberia
The cabanas were clean and beautiful. The food was delicious and the hospitality was excellent. Katia and Jon who run the hotel went above and beyond for us. They made our unscheduled stay in Guanacaste a life memory and for that I am grateful. Beautiful place and beautiful staff, this family run business made us feel like family. Travel is joy and they made it even more joyful. Pura Vida!
Excellent hotel in a remote and private location in the north of Guanacaste. The room was much bigger than expected, and bed were very comfortable. The restaurant of the hotel is also very good! We enjoyed our breakfasts as well as some dinners there! You can easily access many other beaches by car in less than 20 min.
Hotel El Valero was in quiet, sleepy Playa Hermosa in Guanacaste. It's Right on the ocean so the dining room spills into the Pacific. The people were kind and warm (as the Costa Rican people are), the hotel has a 'local' Costa Rican ambiance with rich wood appointments and tile. I would go back again!
Samara is a gem on the Costa Rican Pacific coast. One of our favourite towns and beaches in Guanacaste. Villas Kalimba is one of the nicer places to stay in this town. I would not hesitate to stay here again on a return trip. The staff is great
Everthing , food was amazing , we have avery strict diet we always suffer when we out , here it was no issue , the view from our room was breathtaking , alot of things to do , this is the best all inclisive hotel in guanacaste with no doubt
Liberia
The hostel has a good location near the bus stops to the beaches of Guanacaste. The receptionist recommended me to visit Ocotal Beach which was great. Highly recommended.
The only thing that is nice is the nature that surrounds this place, but there are far nicer beaches in Guanacaste.
This hotel is a hidden gem in Guanacaste. Beautiful room, delicious breakfast and friendly staff.
Great location and wonderful grounds. Small resort, but on an incredible beach in Guanacaste.
A really well maintained property with extensive leisure and dining options. Great choice of food at the breakfast buffet the staff were friendly and helpful. We wish we had booked for longer.
All inclusive package. Food, facilities, staff service. Everything was excelent!!!
This lodge is a treasure. Bungalows of different sizes and facilities are scattered throughout the forest. We stayed in the spacious centre bungalows with large panoramic windows overlooking the forest, a seating area and an outdoor shower. All furnished to a high standard, wonderful bed and bed linen. There is an (empty) fridge and daily small fresh bottles of water and air conditioning. We only met very friendly and helpful people. The whole atmosphere is very relaxed and the location above the gorge, the beautiful architecture and design do the rest. We stayed at the lodge at the beginning of December. At this time of year, the dry forest is full of leaves and particularly beautiful. You should know that this is not the case at the end of the dry season. The food was very good and the selection of dishes offers enough variety even if you are there for several days. From our point of view, the price-performance ratio is also good. The (cold and warm) pools and the thermal river where you can enjoy the warm water in a natural environment are wonderful. There are monkeys but unfortunately few other animals, especially few birds compared to other areas in Costa Rica. However, this is due to the dry forest ecosystem. Due to its proximity to the airport in Liberia, the lodge is a good place to end a trip to Costa Rica.
wow, stay here! it’s beautiful and clean, the staff are wonderful and go above and beyond. they offer some 5 star service perks while still keeping the vibe laid back and relaxed. the pool is big enough that you can relax quietly on a sun lounger ever when it’s busy. the restaurant is good and the rooms are soundproof. as a solo female I felt very safe and comfortable. Will absolutely be staying here again, can’t say enough good things.
Room was large and well equipped. Good choice of restaurants and pools.
We picked this hotel mainly due to the choice of restaurants and also because it had a big swimming pool, gym and spa. We were not disappointed! The food was lovely with something for everyone and we visited all the different restaurants during our stay. The swimming pool area was relaxing even over the busy weekend when there were more guests on site. The gym was well equipped and the spa experience very enjoyable. It has to be said that the polite, cheerful and friendly staff really made our stay very pleasant.
